# Teams

Define how your teams collaborate, plan, and deliver.

At Atono, we believe in bringing together different talents to achieve common goals. We favor cross-functional teams where product owners, designers, developers, and QA work side by side to make great things happen.

You can structure teams in Atono to match your unique workflow. When you create a team, you choose whether it works in [Scrum](https://docs.atono.io/docs/scrum) or [Kanban](https://docs.atono.io/docs/kanban) style. Every team has its own members, one or more admins, and optional backlog owners.

<br />

***

# Workflow type

When you create a team in Atono, you choose whether it uses in a **Scrum** or **Kanban** style workflow. The team workflow determines how work is organized and which pages appear in the sidebar. All other aspects of a team—members and roles—work the same regardless of workflow type. However, some planning features (like sprint management) are available only for Scrum teams.

You can switch a team's workflow type at any time by [editing the team's details](https://docs.atono.io/docs/teams#edit-a-teams-details).

<br />

## Scrum teams

Scrum teams plan and deliver work in time-boxed iterations called sprints. Their team pages reflect this structure:

* A **Backlog** where you can create and plan future sprints.
* An **In progress** page showing the active sprint, available in both list and board view.
* A **Sprint calendar** to see upcoming, active, and past sprints. This page is available only for Scrum teams.

Scrum teams are best suited for teams that work in defined cycles and plan around sprint boundaries.

<br />

## Kanban teams

Kanban teams focus on continuous flow. Their pages are organized around prioritizing and progressing work as it’s ready:

* A traditional **Backlog** showing items in the 'To do' category.
* An **In progress** page that displays the team’s Kanban board and workflow steps.

Kanban teams are ideal for work that moves continuously rather than in fixed iterations.

<br />

# Your teams

You may belong to one or more teams. These teams are accessible from your [Home](https://docs.atono.io/docs/home) page and the sidebar.

You'll also find teams where you're a team admin in the sidebar, along with their backlogs.

<br />

# Team overview

The **Team overview** page provides access to team reporting, members, and team settings.

The page includes two tabs:

* **Analytics** — view reports about your team's delivery, including Story throughput and Cycle time. The Analytics tab opens by default. For details, see [Analytics](https://docs.atono.io/docs/analytics).
* **Team members** — view the team's members and stakeholders, including their email addresses and [team roles](https://docs.atono.io/docs/roles-and-permissions#team-roles). Click a row to open that user's profile.

The page also shows the team's name and description and provides quick access to the team's In progress backlog ([Scrum](https://docs.atono.io/docs/scrum) or [Kanban](https://docs.atono.io/docs/kanban)) and connected [Slack channel](https://docs.atono.io/docs/slack#team-slack-channels).

From the **ellipsis** (...) menu, you can manage team settings such as team details, admins, backlog owners, cycle time window, and team time zone.

# Public vs. private teams

Anyone in your workspace can [create a team](https://docs.atono.io/docs/teams#create-a-team). Based on your project, you can set the team's access type to **public** or **private**.

<br />

## Public teams

Public teams are open to everyone in your workspace. Any user can join, add or remove members, and view their work.

<br />

## Private teams

Private teams are invite-only, meaning the team admin or a member must add you. These teams are ideal for sensitive projects that need to stay confidential. Only team members, team admins, backlog owners, and users with higher-level workspace roles can see the Backlog and In progress pages for private teams.

Private teams are marked with a lock icon next to their name on the Teams page:

<br />

# Backlog management

Each team has a **Backlog management** setting that, when enabled, assigns users with the [backlog owner team role](https://docs.atono.io/docs/roles-and-permissions#backlog-owner) the responsibility for managing upcoming stories for the team. This includes adding and creating stories, reordering stories in the 'To do' category, deleting stories, and moving stories in or out of the 'Won't do' category.

For Scrum teams, this setting also restricts sprint planning. Only backlog owners can create, edit, reschedule, or delete sprints, or add and remove stories from sprints.

When you enable this setting when creating team, you'll be prompted to assign backlog owners. A team can have up to 10 backlog owners. You can update this setting later from the [Team details screen](https://docs.atono.io/docs/teams#edit-a-teams-details).

For more on assigning backlog owners, see [Manage backlog owners](https://docs.atono.io/docs/teams#manage-backlog-owners).

# Join a team

Whether you already know the team’s name or need to search for one, Atono makes joining a team straightforward.

<br />

## Join your first team

If you aren't yet a member of any team, your **Home** page will include a shortcut to join an existing public team. If you know the team's name, this is the fastest way to join.

1. On your **Home** page, click **Join a team**.
2. In the **Join a team** dialog, search for the team's name.
3. Click **Join team**.

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/d1d8110304c2ee81860ddb150ef4b53927a1ebe9808281bd51ce3cf6bb64b6c3-join-team.png" align="center" width="500px" />

<br />

## Search for a team to join

If you don't know the exact name, you can search using keywords from its description and join from the **Team overview** page.

1. In the Atono workspace header, click your workspace's name, then click **Teams**.

2) Use the search bar in the table header to find a team based on keywords in its name or description.

3. Click the team to open the **Team overview** page.
4. Click **Add team members**
5. In the **Add team members** dialog, search for or select your name from the list of users.

# Manage teams

The **Teams** page gives you an overview of all public and private teams in your workspace. You'll see a table showing each team's name, description, team admins, backlog owners, and member count. You can sort and rearrange this table or search for teams using keywords in their name or description. You can also create new teams directly from this page.

<br />

## Create a team

1. Go to your **Home** page or the **Teams** page, and then click **Create team**.
2. In the **Create team** dialog, give the team a unique name and an optional description.
   * Team names are case-insensitive, must be between 1-200 characters long, and can't include @ \{ } \` \~ |
   * Descriptions can be up to 2000 characters long. Including keywords helps others find your team in searches.

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/e4e12a461c52216d96790d0d48e934ec263a8d9e0b581894ec4ec9d385103cac-team-name-description.png" align="center" width="500px" />

3. Under Workflow, choose whether the team uses a Scrum or Kanban workflow.
   * **Scrum** teams plan and deliver work in sprints. Planning uses story points and velocity to forecast what the team can complete each sprint.
   * **Kanban** teams work in a continuous flow. Planning uses cycle time and estimated completion dates to forecast progress.
4. Under **Access**, choose whether to make the team **Public** or **Private** (you can change this later).

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/25232549d0fb82e4cd284edaa8db8b85113b57f18c06623df4876bcddaf9b2ff-team-access-type.png" align="center" width="500px" />

4. (Optional) Choose whether the team's backlog will be managed by a [backlog owner.](https://docs.atono.io/docs/roles-and-permissions#backlog-owner)

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/edb4c73aafd39f8a1935d455a034b13d5057b1423bbc45c6fdf133551e3c65b9-backlog-management.png" align="center" width="500px" />

5. (Optional) Enable **Add members after creating the team** if you want to add people immediately after the team is created.

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/563a8d39912343076d76158805dbe3392c3cfef68042aaf944de46a72a5dc7d6-add-member-after-creation.png" align="center" width="500px" />

6. Click **Create team**.
7. If you enabled **Backlog management**, you'll be prompted to select one or more backlog owners for the team. Backlog owners do not need to be members of the team.

Atono automatically makes you the team admin when you create a team. If you also want to be a team member, you can add yourself like any other user.

<br />

## Add team members

You can add members to teams from either the **Team overview** page or while managing users across the system.

### Add members from the Team overview page

* **Switching to Kanban**: All sprints are permanently deleted. Items remain assigned to the team but are no longer organized into sprints.

* **Switching to Scrum**: Any items currently in progress are moved to the **To do** workflow step and marked as **Unscheduled** so they can be assigned to a sprint.

You'll be prompted to confirm the change before it takes effect.

<br />

# Team Slack channels

If the Slack integration is enabled for your workspace, the **Team overview** page will include an option to **Connect Slack channel**.

Linking your team to a Slack channel keeps communication within reach, ensuring discussions and updates are accessible whenever you need them. This setup allows your team to manage projects in Atono while staying connected in real-time through Slack. For more details, head over to our [Slack integration guide](https://docs.atono.io/docs/slack#team-slack-channels).
