Tags let you label stories, bugs, and epics with keys and values, like Component: api or Severity: high, so you can categorize work in ways that matter to your organization and find related items later.

Anyone in your workspace can apply tags to items, create new tags while viewing an item, and remove tags. Workspace Owners and Administrators can also manage all tags centrally from the Tags page.

Understand tag structure

Each tag consists of a key and a value. The key is the category, like Component, and the value is the label within it, like api or front-end. A key can have multiple available values, but each tag applied to an item is a single key:value pair. An item can have one value per key, with up to 30 tags per item.

• Keys can contain letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores, up to 32 characters.
• Values can contain any printable character except a comma, up to 32 characters.

Apply tags

You apply tags directly on a story, bug, or epic. As you type, Atono suggests matching keys and values, so you can pick up tags your team already uses or create new ones on the spot.

Add an existing tag to an item

1. Open the story, bug, or epic you want to tag.
2. Do one of the following:
   • Stories and bugs: In the details side panel, next to Tags, click the plus symbol (+).
   • Epics: In the header, click Add tag or the tag icon.
3. Start typing a key. Atono suggests existing keys that match what you've typed.
   • Keys already applied to this item aren't suggested, since you can only apply a key once per item.
4. Select a key in one of the following ways:
   • Select it from the list.
   • Press Tab to complete the key with the best match, then press Enter or Return to select it.
   • Type : to select the best match.
5. Start typing a value. Atono suggested existing values.
6. Select a value in one of the following ways:
   • Select it from the list.
   • Press Tab to complete the value with the best match, then press Enter or Return to select it.

Once the tag is applied, you can repeat the process to keep adding more tags.

Press Escape at any time to cancel.

You can also bulk add or remove tags from stories, bugs, and epics on the Everything page. For steps, see Bulk actions > Add tags to items.

Create a new tag on an item

1. Open the story, bug, or epic you want to tag.
2. Do one of the following:
   • Stories and bugs: In the details side panel, next to Tags, click the plus symbol (+).
   • Epics: In the header, click Add tag or the tag icon.
3. Type the new key and select the option to Create a tag with the text you entered.
4. Type a value and select the option to Create a tag with the new key and value pair.

Workspace Owners and Administrators can also create tags from the Tags page, where they can add a description and multiple values at once. See Create a tag from the Tags page.

View tag details

Hover over the tag in the details side panel to see a pop up with the tag description and counts for how many epics, stories, or bugs it's applied to.

Remove a tag from an item

Hover over the tag on an item and click the X icon when it appears.

Removing a tag from an item doesn't delete the tag from your workspace.

Find items with or without a tag

On the Everything page, filter by tag to see all stories, bugs, and epics including or excluding specific key:value pairs, or any value of a key. For more details, see Filter the list.

Manage tags

Workspace Owners and Administrators can view and manage all tags in the workspace.

The Tags page lists every tag in your workspace, sorted alphabetically by key by default. For each tag you can see its description (if available), how many values it has, how many items use it, when it was last applied, who created it, and when.

Hover over the uses or values count to preview items with the tag applied, or its individual values.

Access the Tags page

1. In the Atono workspace header, click your workspace's name.
2. From the menu, select Tags.

Search tags

Quickly locate a tag by searching for a keyword in its name.

1. Click the search (magnifying glass) icon at the top of the table.
2. Enter a search term. The table automatically updates to show matching tags with the search term highlighted.

Sort tags

Click a column header to sort by tag, uses, last applied, created by, or created date.

View a tag

Click a tag to see all of its values and how each one is used.

Create a tag

Workspace Owners and Administrators can create tags from the Manage tags view.

Creating tags from the Tags page lets you define the key, description, and several values at once before the team starts applying them.

1. On the Tags page, click Create tag.
2. Enter a key and optional description of up to 255 characters. The description appears when someone hovers over the tag on an item.
3. Enter at least one value. You can add multiple values.
4. Click Create tag.

Add a value to a tag

1. On the Tags page, click a tag.
2. Add a value in one of the following ways:
   • Click Create value, enter the value in the dialog, and click Create value.
   • At the bottom of the values list, click Create value, enter the value inline, and press Enter or Return.
3. Repeat the process to add more values.

Values must be unique within a tag.

Edit a tag

Rename a tag's key or update its description, for example to fix a typo or align spelling with your team's conventions. Renaming a tag updates it on every item where it's applied.

1. Do one of the following:
   • On the Tags page, hover over the tag you want to edit, and click the ellipsis (...) icon when it appears at the far right of the table row.
   • When viewing a tag, click the ellipsis (...) icon at the top of the screen next to the tag title.
2. From the menu, select Edit tag details.
3. Update the key or description.
4. Click Update tag, or click X to cancel.

Edit a tag's values

Edit a value to correct a typo, update its wording, or keep values consistent across your workspace.

1. On the Tags page, click the Tag you want to edit the values of.
2. On the tag's details page, hover over the value you want to edit and click the ellipsis (...) icon when it appears at the far right of the table row.
3. From the menu, select Edit value.
4. Update the value, then click Update value, or click X to cancel.
   

Tag activities

When a tag is added to or removed from a story, bug, or epic, Atono records the change in the item’s Activities list. Each entry shows who made the change, when it occurred, and the tag’s key and value.

To see only tag-related changes for an item, open the Type filter and select Tag.

Delete a tag

You can delete a single value from a tag, or delete the tag along with all of its values.

Deleting a value removes that key:value pair from every item tagged with it. Deleting a tag removes it and all of its values from every item. In both cases, Atono informs you how many items are affected and asks you to confirm.

Deleting a value removes that key:value pair from every item tagged with it. Other values of the same key aren't affected. If you delete a tag's last remaining value, the tag itself is deleted, since a tag must have at least one value.

1. On the Tags page, click the Tag you want to delete a value from.
2. On the tag's details page, hover over the value you want to delete and click the ellipsis (...) icon when it appears at the far right of the table row.
3. From the menu, select Delete.
4. In the Delete tag dialog, click Delete tag to confirm you want to delete the tag with this specific key:value pair, or click X to cancel.
